HR Issues to Consider During the New ‘Abnormal’

I am aware that there are many conflicting priorities in our world right now, including HR-related matters. Unexpectedly many new acronyms have entered our everyday lexicon, including PPP, FFCRA, CDC, PPE, and CARES. It's not too late to sort through the chaos and concentrate on what matters most for your company.

In light of the global epidemic, there are a bewildering array of new workplace challenges that need to be addressed. The following is a list of those that deserve your attention:

                                     FFCRA Leave Entitlements

Ensure that you are informing staff members of their right to paid time off in the event that they are ill, providing care for someone who is ill, or are unable to work due to a lack of childcare. The employer receives a tax credit for the WHOLE amount of these payments. Have you made the necessary payroll system adjustments? Have you properly posted the Department of Labor flyer?                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   (Teague, 2017)

                                                      Return to Work Plans

Employers should develop a plan for: social distance in the workplace, the use of PPE, temperature testing, rotating shifts to reduce physical proximity, accommodations for people at high risk, workplace cleanliness, personal hygiene requirements and reminders. As restrictions are eased and workers begin returning to the workplace in greater numbers. Have you put up the Illinois Department of Public Health's necessary notice?

                                                                                                                                                     (RezaAzizi, 2021)

Unemployment Benefits that Prevent Return to Work

Employees should no longer be entitled to obtain large unemployment benefits if they continue to refuse to report to work when asked. Employers can take action by informing the Illinois Department of Employment Security about the rejection and warning the employee that it would be regarded as a "voluntary resignation" if they do not comply. For PPP forgiveness, employers might still be able to count these people as FTEs (see the PPP Loan Forgiveness application). Are your offers to return to work documented the same way you would a new job offer?

Layoffs/Furloughs and the Impact on Health Benefits

These two possibilities differ significantly from one another. The employment relationship is totally terminated when someone gets laid off. Benefits are discontinued and last pay is issued. Similar to an unpaid leave of absence, a furlough. Although the employee is still listed on the books, they are not currently being paid. Benefits continue to exist. Employers are free to continue using one or both as they restructure their company to accommodate both the present and future demands. Do you need to think about hiring back former employees in order to be eligible for loan forgiveness if you received a PPP loan? Have you made COBRA Continuation Coverage available as required, based on whether you choose to be laid off or take a furlough?                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       (Teague, 2017)

                                                 Salary/Wage Rate Adjustments

Paying someone less to perform the same task should be carefully evaluated. It may give workers the feeling that their worth is lowered while aiding the firm in saving money. Additionally, excessive modifications can prevent PPP forgiveness from being granted. What are your work prospects going forward? Would it be better to hire fewer people overall so that those who do remain can receive their full pay?

Never before have employers had to deal with so many new needs so quickly. All of these subjects are related to one another. All policy decisions must be taken into account because judgments in one area will definitely affect decisions in other areas. I would be happy to assist if you need a sounding board or have queries regarding which buttons or levers to operate. Please don't hesitate to get in touch. I hope you and your group stay healthy, secure, and content.                                                                                                                                                                                    (RashaAtlasi, 2021)

                                               Conclusion
